A Short History of the Atlanta Falcons
The Atlanta Falcons are an American professional football team in Atlanta, Georgia. They are a member of the National Football Conference (NFC) in the South Division of the NFL. In 1966 the Falcons came on board as an NFL expansion team. Over the last 42 years, the Falcons managed to compose a record of 262-386-6, in 1980, 1998 and 2004 division championships.
Norb Hecker, former assistant to Vince Lombardi of the Green Bay Packers, was the Falcon's first head coach. Tommy Nobis was the Falcon's first draft pick. And in 1966 the NFL awarded him "Rookie of the Year." The Falcons made their first playoff debut in 1978 with a 9-7 record. They entered the playoffs as a wild card team. Atlanta defeated the Philadelphia Eagles before losing to the Dallas Cowboys in Divisional Playoffs. In 1980, the Atlanta Falcons returned in top form winning the Western Division. But again, like the season before they lost to the Cowboys.
During 1982, the Falcons were successful in making it to the playoffs, but they lost to the Vikings. Following the loss, Leeman Bennett - the Falcons head coach, was fired from the team. After that season, it was 1991 before the Falcons made it to another playoff and that time they lost to the Washington Redskins in the Divisional Playoffs. In 1998, the Falcons experienced their greatest season in football to date.
Rivalries - The Atlanta Falcons count the New Orleans Saints and the Carolina Panthers as longtime rivals. The rivalry between the Falcons and the Panthers has been coined the "I-84 Rivalry" because both Atlanta and Charlotte (the home of the Carolina Panthers) are along the route of Interstate 85. The rivalry between the Falcons and the Saints is due in part to both teams being the first in the "deep south" and having shared so many players and coaches over the years.
