A Short History of the Baltimore Ravens

The Baltimore Ravens are a professional American football team based in Baltimore, Maryland. They compete in the AFC North Division of the NFL. The Ravens won Super Bowl XXXV, in the 2000 season against the N.Y. Giants.

The team is named after a poem entitled "The Raven" by American writer Edgar Allan Poe, who lived in Baltimore during the 1830s. The Baltimore Ravens franchise was founded after the 1995 NFL season when Author B. Modell, owner of the Cleveland Browns, moved his team from Cleveland, Ohio, to Baltimore and renamed it the Ravens.

The new team brought to Baltimore a new roster of veteran stars which included quarterback Vinny Testaverde and running back Earnest Byner. Ted Marchibroda, former Baltimore Colts head coach, was hired to lead the new team. Marchibroada produced three successive Eastern Division titles for the Colts in the mid-1970s, but coaching the Ravens proved to be quite difficult.

While they had a strong offense, the team continued to struggle with its defense and finished at the bottom of the Central Division in 1996 and 1997. Following the 1997 season, Testaverde left the team and signed as a free agent with the N.Y. Jets. Finishing the 1998 season with 6 wins and 10 losses, the Ravens hired Minnesota Vikings offensive head coach Brian Billick.

Rivalries - The Baltimore Ravens count the Cleveland Browns and the Pittsburgh Steelers as their two biggest rivalries. The Steelers and the Ravens met in the 2001 AFC Divisional playoffs. There was a lot of trash talk before the game as both teams split their regular season meetings. The rivalry has been ongoing since. Their rivalry with the Browns is fairly new and began before the teams first met. It is quite difficult to understate the amount of hatred the Browns feel both towards the Raven organization in general and the he Modell family in particular after moving the team, renaming them and more taking place over the years.
