A Short History of the Carolina Panthers
The Carolina Panthers are a professional American football team in Charlotte, North Carolina. They represent both North Carolina and South Carolina in the NFL. They are members of the National Football Conference (NFC) South Division. The Panthers joined the NFL in 1995 as an expansion team.
The Panthers summer training is hosted at Wofford College in Spartanburg, South Carolina, alma mater of Jerry Richardson, the Panther's owner. They play at Ericsson Stadium in Charlotte, North Carolina. In 1996, the Panthers shocked the NFL by winning 12 consecutive games and capturing the NFC Western Division title.
Fast forward to the teams 2001 season and the Carolina Panthers suffered an unfavorable year. They lost fifteen consecutive games, an NFL record. Two seasons later, under the leadership of head coach John Fox, they finished up the regular season with an 11-5 record. After Panther's advanced to the playoff's after winning the National Football Conference's South Division title. They made it to the Super Bowl and as they were about to make history, it all came crashing down when a field goal was made with only four seconds left on the clock. The Panthers lost Super Bowl XXXVIII to the New England Patriots.
Rivalries - The Carolina Panthers consider the Tampa Bay Buccaneers and the Atlanta Falcons their rivals. Their rivalry with the Bucs began after the 2002 divisional re-organization which put both teams into the NFC South. Their rivalry with the Falcons has always been marked by close scores and amazing plays from both teams.
