A Short History of the Denver Broncos
The Denver Broncos are a professional American football team based in Denver, Colorado. The Broncos are a member of the American Football Conference (AFC) Western Division in the NFL. The Broncos began playing football in 1960 as a charter member of the AFL and joined the NFL as part of the AFL/NFL Merger in 1970.
On September 9, 1960, the Broncos won the first-ever American Football League game over the Boston Patriots 13-10. On August 5, 1967, they became the second AFL team to defeat an NFL team when they beat the Detroit Lions, 13-7, in a preseason game.
Denver has made it to the Super Bowl six times and won in the 1997 and 1998 seasons. It's hard for many to remember a time, when, Denver was one of the lowliest of teams, managing its first winning season in 1973, after thirteen years of losing.
In fact, they are the only original AFL team to never have played in the title game during the upstart league's 10-year history. In 1965, Denver came close to losing its franchise, but a local group took control that year and was able to rebuild and bring the team back.
The Broncos and the Oakland raiders have been heated divisional rivals since the two teams entered the AFL in 1960. While the Raiders hold an advantage (54-39-2), the Broncos have won seven of the last eight matchups (2003-2006). Broncos head coach Mike Shanahan coached the Raiders prior to being fired only four games into the 1989 season, which served to intensify and already heated rivalry between the teams.
Rivalries - The Denver Broncos share a rivalry with the Kansas City Chiefs, they met in 1960. After the Chiefs won in the regular season, Denver went on to beat Kansas City at Arrowhead Stadium in the playoffs, and they eventually won Super Bowl XXXII. Their rivalry with the Oakland Raiders has been long held, but worsened when former Raider coach, Mike Shanahan became Denver's new head coach in 1995 after a contract dispute with Al Davis, which served to make an already contentious rivalry that much more sour.
