A Short History of the Detroit Lions
The Detroit Lions are an American professional football team in Detroit, Michigan. They are one of four teams playing in the Northern Division of the National Football Conference (NFC) in the NFL. The Lions were originally based in Portsmouth, Ohio and named the Portsmouth Spartans. They began playing in 1929 as an independent professional team.
In 1930, the Spartans formally joined the NFL as other area independents folded due to the Great Depression. While they were successful within the NFL, they could not survive in Portsmouth. In 1934, the team was purchased by George Richards and at that time they were relocated to Detroit and renamed the Detroit Lions.
During the Lion's first season, quarterback Dutch Clark led the team in rushing, passing and scoring. However the team shut out their first 7 opponents and surrendered a record-low average game for the season and failed to qualify for the playoffs. In 1935, they got their first NFL title.
The Detroit Lions have won four pre-Super Bowl NFL Championships, the last one in 1957, but they have yet to qualify for a modern day Super Bowl. The team has only won a single playoff game since 1957, since 1991.
Rivalries - The Detroit Lions share a long and bitter rivalry with the Green Bay Packers. One of the NFL's oldest and most storied rivalries, there have been a substantial collection of battles on and off the field. They also have rivalries with both the Minnesota Vikings and the Chicago Bears.

Below you'll find a few videos that should get any Detroit Lion fan charged up and ready to hit a game! First, watch a video tribute to Barry Sanders of the Detroit Lions - one of the greatest running backs of all time. The 1990s were "the Barry Sanders Show" in Detroit. He retired from the Detroit Lions abruptly following the 1998 season and his absence has left a hole in the team that may never be filled. The second video we grabbed is an awesome video of the Detroit Lions. See incredible footage of all your favorite past and present Lions including Roy Williams, Artose Pinner and Jason Hanson (you can even catch a shot or two of the not hard to look at cheerleaders!) doing what they do best... tackling the other team, making touch downs, carrying the ball over the goal line, catching amazing paasses and much more!
