A Short History of the Houston Texans
The Houston Texans are a professional American football team in Houston, Texas. They are one of four members of the Southern Division of the American Football Conference (AFC) in the NFL. The Texans joined the NFL in 2002 as an expansion team. In 1997, the city's previous franchise, the Houston Oilers, moved to Nashville, Tennessee, and changed their names to the Tennessee Titans in 1999.
The Houston Texans are the second expansion team since 1960 to open their first regular game of the season with a win. They first beat the Dallas Cowboys and a year later they went on to defeat the Miami Dolphins marking the first time an expansion club won its opening game since 1961.
On March 2, 2000 the team announced five name choices, the Apollos, Bobcats, Stallions, Texans and Wildcatters. The list was then broken down to Apollos, Stallions and Texans. After spending months deciding on the perfect name, the team unveiled its new name, the Texans' on September 6, 2000.
In 2001 the Houston Texans hired Dom Capers, former defensive coordinator for the Jacksonville Jaguars, as its new head coach. Caper's was also the head coach to the Carolina Panthers who joined the NFL in 1995. The Houston Texans home stadium, Reliant Stadium was opened in 2002.
Rivalries - The Houston Texans haven't done much since their inception in 2002 to make enemies of other teams. However, most fans consider the Tennessee Titans to be a rival team due to what many feel was their betrayal in changing themslves from the Houston Oilers to the Tennessee Titans and leaving Houston without a football team.

Texan fans will get a kick out of the two videos below! The first video is of the Houston Texans vs. Indianapolis Colts game on December 24th 2006. The video is short and it's very much worth watching and remembering that winning moment when the Texans took the game from the Colts. It captures the Texans winning field goal with two seconds left on the clock. One of our staff members was actually present at the stadium during this game and demanded this video be included on the Texans page! For the second video, you'll need to sit back, relax and take in a slideshow tribute video of the Houston Texans. The video is full of winning moments and highlights from team favorites over the seasons. See tackles, touchdowns, runs and more.
