A Short History of the Indianapolis Colts
The Indianapolis Colts are a professional American football team in Indianapolis, Indiana. The Colts are one of four teams playing in the Southern Division of the American Football Conference (AFC) in the NFL. Professional football in Maryland dates back to the late 1940s when the Miami Seahawks moved to Baltimore and became the Colts. In 1948 Baltimore tied for the Easter Division crown. A year later the AAFC folded and the Colts joined the NFL, but after only two consecutive seasons with 1011 win/loss records, the franchise dissolved.
In 1953, the Colts were reborn when the NFL's Dallas Texans moved to Baltimore and took on the name the Colts. Owner, Carroll Rosenbloom sent five Colts to the Cleveland Browns in exchange for ten players, including defensive back Don Shula. After four years of rebuilding, the Colts earned consecutive NFL titles in 1958 and 1959.
Both years, Baltimore assembled the league's top offense, with teams starring four future Hall of Fame members. Baltimore's overtime defeat of the New York Giants in the 1958 NFL Championship game is remembered as one of the greatest NFL contests ever played. The following year, the Colts again got the better of the Giants for the NFL crown.
After seven straight losing seasons from 1978 to 1984, with fan support dissipating, the Colts moved to Indianapolis. In 1995 the Colts reached the AFC Championship Game, but they lost to the Pittsburgh Steelers. In 1999 the team made it to the Eastern Division championship, but they lost to the Tennessee Titans in the playoffs.
Rivalries - The Indianapolis Colts count the Tennessee Titans as their lead rival. Entering the 2008 football season, the Indianapolis Colts and the Tennessee Titans are the only AFC South Teams who have made it to the Super Bowl.
