A Short History of the Jacksonville Jaguars

The Jacksonville Jaguars are a professional American football team in Jacksonville, Florida. They are members of the Southern Division of the American Football Conference (AFC) in the NFL. In 1995, the Jaguars became the thirtieth NFL franchise, as an expansion team. The Jag play at Alltel Stadium in Jacksonville, Florida.

Each year the city hosts the Gator Bowl, which is an annual civic highlight traditionally accompanied by ceremonies, parades, parties and other events that lead up to the game. The annual Florida vs. Georgia game is also played in Jacksonville.

During its first year, the team fielded the worst defense in the AFC, losing nine games by more than twenty four points. Offensively, they did well. Mark Brunell, who had previously played in only two NFL games, posted the highest rating of any expansion team quarterback in league history. Overall, Jacksonville's offensive success ranked third all time among first year franchises. They won nine games in 1996 and were rewarded with a wild card berth to the playoffs.

The Jaguars advanced to the AFC title game, where they were defeated by the New England Patriots. In 1997, Jacksonville again advanced to the playoffs but lost in the first round to the Denver Broncos. In 1998 Brunell led the team to a 11-5 win-loss record and the Central Division Championship. They defeated New England Patriots in the first round of the playoff before they were defeated by the New York Jets.

In 1999 Jacksonville became the Central Division Champion but they were defeated by the Tennessee Titans in the AFC Championship Game. To date, the Jaguars are yet to play in a Super Bowl game.

Rivalries - The Jacksonville Jaguars count the Tennessee Titans as their top rival. A rivalry was ongoing between the teams and became worse when a quote was made by Titans Head Coach Jeff Fisher claiming that the Jaguars' stadium was the Titans' home away from home.

Fans of the Jags (known during the nineties as the "Cardiac Jags") will likely enjoy the two videos below. The first video lets you re-live and re-watch the Jaguars crushing the Dolphins, 62-7 in 99' playoffs. Watch as the Jags take the game in what turned out to be Dan Marino and Jimmy Johnson's last NFL game. Jacksonville's 62 points and 55 point margin are the second most ever in NFL playoff history and Fred Taylor's 90-yard run is still the longest ever in an NFL playoff game. The second video highlights fan favorite Jaguars Linebacker, number 54, Mike Peterson from the opening day warm ups vs. The Tennessee Titans in 07. The man is a beast! It's a short video, but Peterson (and Jag) fans will enjoy the close up shot and time spent watching him get ready for the game.
