A Short History of the Miami Dolphins

The Miami Dolphins are a professional American football team based in Miami, Florida. Home games are played at the Dolphin Stadium, in Miami Gardens. The Dolphins are part of the Eastern Division of the American Football Conference (AFC) in the NFL. Founded in 1966, by Joseph Robbie, the Dolphins began play in the AFL as an expansion team and joined the NFL as part of the AFL/NFL Merger in 1970.

The Dolphins made its first Super Bowl appearance following the 1971 football season in the Super Bowl VI, but lost to the Dallas Cowboys. In 1972, the team finished the NFL's first perfect season winning all 14 regular season games, two playoff games and Super Bowl VII. To this day, they are still the only team to have accomplished this record.

The 1972 Dolphins held the fourth flawless season in all of NFL history. They also won Super Bowl VIII, making them the first team to appear in three successive Super Bowls and the second team to win consecutive championships. For most of their years, the Dolphins were coached by Don Shula, the most successful head coach in football history. His teams posted losing records in only two of his 26 seasons as coach.

Six future Hall of Fame members played for Miami during the 1970s including Larry Csonka and Bob Griese. Dan Marino became the most prolific passer in NFL history during the 1980s and 1990s, surpassing numerous league passing records. He led Miami to several playoffs over the years and to Super Bowl XIX in 1985 (although they lost).

Rivalries - The Miami Dolphins count the New England Patriots and the Buffalo Bills as two of their top rivalries.

Do you really want to miss this?

Below you'll find pictures that we here at TicketFireSale.com took the last time we attended a Miami Dolphins game, which was against the Buffalo Bills (those of us that went were definitely split in who we were cheering for). You can also watch a historic video below of the 1985 Miami Dolphins vs. the Chicago Bears. Watch Miami finish 12-4, in an epic Monday Night Football showdown that shocked many and left others thrilled beyond all words. The Dolphins handed the previously undefeated Chicago Bears their only defeat of the season. Many fans were looking forward to a rematch with Chicago in Super Bowl XX, but that never did happen as the New England Patriots, the Dolphins' opponents in the AFC Championship, had other plans.
