A Short History of the New Orleans Saints

The New Orleans Saints are a professional American football team in New Orleans, Louisiana. They play in the Southern Division of the National Football Conference (NFC) in the NFL.

Founded in 1967, the Saints joined the NFL as an expansion team. The Saints went for nearly two decades before having a winning season. Their first successful years were from 1987 to 1992. During this time the team made the playoffs four times and had winning records in the non-playoff seasons. In the 2000 season, the Saints defeated the then defending Super Bowl champions the St. Louis Rams for their first playoff win.

The Saints have been playing their home games at the Louisiana Superdome since 1975. Due to damage caused by Hurricane Katrina in the New Orleans area, the team's 2005 home game opener was played at the Giants Stadium. The remaining games of the season were split between LSU's Tiger Stadium in Baton Rouge, Louisiana and Alamode in San Antonio, Texas. The team returned to the Superdome for their 2006 season after $185 million spent on renovations.

The New Orleans Saints are only one of six teams to never have made an appearance in a Super Bowl.

Rivalries - The New Orleans Saints have a rivalry with the Atlanta Falcons. Their rivalry is often cited by sports writers as one of "the best in sports" due to the rate at which die hard fans of both teams take it seriously during games in which the two teams meet - many driving the seven hour distance between the two cities.
