A Short History of the New York Jets

The New York Jets are a professional American football team based in New York. They are members of the Eastern Division of the American Football Conference (AFC) in the NFL. They play their home games in East Rutherford, New Jersey at Giants Stadium, which is named after another NFL team, the New York Giants.

The team started in 1960 as a charter member of the AFL under the name New York Titans. In 1963, it was renamed after Sonny Werblin bought the team. The Jets joined the NFL as part of the AFL/NFL Merger in 1970. The Jets were the first AFL team to defeat an NFL team in an AFL/NFL World Championship Game when they defeated the Baltimore Colts in Super Bowl III.

In 1969, the Jets would reach the height of its existence and deliver the moment that would mark the AFL's coming of age. Under Joe Namath's (team quarterback) guidance, the Jets rose to the top of the AFL defeating the Oakland Raiders in an exciting championship game, 27-23. The win qualified them to represent their league in a game that was later referred to for the first time as the Super Bowl (and referred to retroactively as the Super Bowl III).

Rivalries - The New York Jets and the N.E. Patriots are long time rivals. Patriots former Coach Bill Parcells left New England following a dispute with team owner Robert Kraft over team direction, and the Jets then negotiated the right to hire Parcells. Three years later, former assistant to Parcells, Bill Belichick, left the Jets (to coach New England) - only one day after agreeing to succeed Parcells as head coach. As you might have imagined, this fueled an ongoing rivalry. Both teams play in the American Football Conference East Division and play two scheduled games against one another each season. The Jets also have a rivalry with the Miami Dolphins.

Below you'll find two videos we thought New York Jet fans might like to catch (horrible pun intended). First, watch the most important play of the New York Jets 2006 Football Season. During a "Monday Night Football", tied with Miami late in the 4th quarter, Chad Pennington dumps the ball off to rookie RB Leon Washington who is evasive, shakes off a couple tacklers and runs past the defense for a 64 yard catch and run. Five days later the Jets went on to beat Oakland, which clinched a playoff berth. Next, watch Jason Pociask getting an awesome touchdown in a New York Jets vs. Minnesota Vikings preseason football game on August 17, 2007. Many seem to think (and some of our staff tends to share the opinion) that Pociask is an under-rated player that has not been able to showcase his full talents... until now. With more games and touchdowns like these, Gang Green will not be a name used to refer to the Jets (the Eagles can have it back!) in upcoming seasons.
