A Short History of the Oakland Raiders
The Oakland Raiders are a professional American football team in the city of Oakland, California. They play in the Western Division of the American Football Conference (AFC) in the NFL. The Raiders began 1960 as the eight member of the AFL, where they won three division titles and one championship. In 1970 the team joined the NFL as part of the AFL-NFL Merger. The Raiders have won twelve division titles and three Super Bowls since joining the NFL and have appeared in two other Super Bowls. The team has thirteen enshrines in the Pro Football Hall of Fame.
The Raiders struggled on and off the field for their first three seasons. In 1963, Al Davis was brought to the team as general coach and general manager. Almost immediately, Davis turned the Raiders into a winning team. From 1963 to 2002 the team had only seven losing seasons. He initiated the use of team slogans such as "Just Win, Baby," "Pride and Poise," "Commitment to Excellence" and others - all of which are registered trademarks.
In 1982, after several years of legal battling, Davis was able to move the team from Oakland to Los Angeles, California. While in Los Angeles, they won their third Super Bowl, but made only two playoff appearances throughout the rest of the 1980s. Davis decided to move the team back to Oakland in 1995. In 2000, head coach Jon Gruden led Oakland to their first division title since 1990. Under head coach Bill Callahan, Oakland faced Gruden's Tampa Bay Buccaneers in Super Bowl XXVII, where they were defeated in a whopping 48-21. Since the loss, the Raiders have posted five consecutive losing seasons.
In January 2007, the Raiders named Lane Kiffin their fourth head coach since Gruden's 2002 departure.
Rivalries - The Oakland Raiders are one of the most rivaled teams in the NFL. They count the Denver Broncos, Kansas City Chiefs and San Diego Chargers as their top division rivals and count the San Francisco 49ers as their top geographical rivals.
