A Short History of the Philadelphia Eagles
The Philadelphia Eagles are a professional American football team in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. They are members of the Eastern Division of the National Football Conference (NFC) of the NFL. The Philadelphia Eagles play home games at Veterans Stadium located in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania.
The Eagles, previously named the Frankford Yelllow Jackets, began playing football in 1924. In 1933, the team owners Lud Wray and Bert Bell relocated the team to Philadelphia, Pennsylvania and changed the teams name to Eagles. The team struggled during its first ten seasons posting losing records.
From 1948 to 1960 the Eagles gained three NFL titles, earning successive crowns in 1948 and 1949 under the leadership of Earle "Greasy" Neale, head coach of the team. In 1981 the Eagles made it to Super Bowl XV, but they were defeated by the Raiders.
Following a six-year drought, Philadelphia made it to postseason from 1988 to 1992. Buddy Ryan, former Chicago Bears defensive coordinator helped the Eagles to develop a smashing offense that was centered around Randall Cunningham, who became a skilled passer and later known as one of the greatest running quarterbacks in NFL history. In 2005, the Eagles made it to Super Bowl XXXIX but they were defeated by the New England Patriots.
Rivalries - The Philadelphia Eagles count the Dallas Cowboys as a team rival. While this rivalry is less intense then the rivalry between the Cowboys vs. Redskins, it is still considered to be one of the greatest in NFL history as both teams, along with their fans, usually pose a great challenge when they meet up. Additionally, the Eagles share a very heated rivalry with New York Giants rivalry is one of the oldest in the NFL, dating back to 1933. Funnily enough, this rivalry is strongest in New Jersey fans, which is technically without a football team (at least one that carries their name). North Jersey considers the Giants to be the hometown team while South Jersey consider the Eagles their hometown team. The Eagles also share a relatively new rivalry with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers.
