A Short History of the San Diego Chargers
The San Diego Chargers are a professional American football team in San Diego, California. They are members of the Western Division of the American Football Conference (AFC) in the NFL. Originally called the Los Angeles Chargers, the team began playing in 1960 as the sixth charter member of the AFL. The team spent its first season in Los Angeles before relocating in 1961.
The Chargers won the AFL Western Division Championship under head coach Sid Gillman, but suffered heavy financial losses and moved the team back to San Diego the following year. San Diego lost four of five AFL Championship games, recording its only victory in 1963 over the Boston Patriots.
Don Coryell was named head coach and Dan Fouts took over as starting quarterback in 1978. Fouts captured the first of three consecutive passing titles to lead the Chargers to the first of three straight division crowns... a year later. In 1979 Fouts strung together four consecutive 300 yard games, making a record while en route to the first 4000-yard season in NFL history. The records were only two of many that he set during his 15-year career.
At the end of the 1994 season, the Chargers came face to face with the San Francisco 49ers in Super Bowl XXIX and lost 49-26. The Chargers have one coach and five players enshrined in the Pro Football Hall of Fame in Canton Ohio. The Chargers play at Qualcomm Stadium in San Diego, California.
Rivalries - The San Diego Chargers count the Oakland Raiders as their top rival. The Raiders are many teams' most hated rival and the Chargers have been in the same division and state for 40 years. The Raiders went into San Diego to defeat the Chargers 34-27, in the 1980 AFC Championship Game, in their only playoff meetup to date.
