The San Francisco 49ers are a professional American football team. They are members of the Western Division of the National Football Conference (NFC) in the NFL. In 1946, the 49ers started playing football as a charter member for the All-America Football Conference (AAFC). In 1950, following the AAFC merger, they signed with the NFL. The team home games are played in San Francisco, California, while headquarters and practice facilities are located in Santa Clara.
The 49ers share an impressive record of most Super Bowl wins (five) along with the Dallas Cowboys and the Pittsburgh Steelers, and they are the only undefeated NFL team to have made numerous appearances in the Super Bowl, with a record of 5-0.
The San Francisco 49ers teams of the 1980s and early 1990s were amongst the best in NFL history, specifically the 1984 and 1989 teams. Joe Montana, Super Bowl three-time MVP, long standing Pro Bowler Ronnie Lott and all time quarterback Steve young all played for the 49ers during this great period.
