A Short History of the Seattle Seahawks
The Seattle Seahawks are a professional American football team in Seattle, Washington, members of the Western Division of the National Football Conference (NFC) in the NFL. The Seahawks entered the NFL in 1976 alongside the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, as an expansion team. Seattle is the only team that has played in both the AFC (American Football Conference) and the NFC (National Football Conference) Championship Games.
A year later they switched conferences and joined AFC West. They played in the American Conference until 2002, when they switched back to the NFC during the league realignment. The team has three different stadiums they have called "home" - the Kingdome was home from 1976 to 1999, Husky Stadium from 2000 to 2001 and they have been home at Qwest Field since 2002. The Seahawks have made one Super Bowl (XL) appearance, in 2006, when they were defeated by the Pittsburgh Steelers. Three Seattle Seahawk players have been inducted to the Pro Football Hall of Fame, they include: Franco Harris, Carl Eller and Steve Largent.
The team's usage of the phrase "12th Man" (the teams' reference to their supporters) was tied up in a court battle for the duration of the 2005/2006 football season when Texas A&M University filed a lawsuit against the Seahawks for trademark infringement. The case was settled out of court, with the Seahawks agreeing to concede ownership rights to the 12th Man slogan belonging to A&M. In return, the team was permitted to continue use of the phrase. As a fan tribute, the Seahawks retired the #12 during a game on December 15, 1984. Since that game the jerseys have been sold by the Seahawks and worn by the fans. The team has a ceremony before each home game where a flag bearing the #12 is raised in honor.
Rivalries - The Seattle Seahawks have rivalries with the St. Louis Rams and the Oakland Raiders. The Rams vs. Seahawks rivalry is pretty new and stems from the division realignment when the Seahawks moved back to the NFC West from the AFC West in 2002. That realignment also moved them away from their long standing rivalry with the Oakland Raiders who were no longer in their division after the move, though fans of the two organizations are far from willing to call the rivalry dead.
