A Short History of the Tennessee Titans

The Tennessee Titans are a professional American football team based in Nashville, Tennessee. They are members of the South Division of the American Football Conference (AFC) in the NFL.

The team was previously known as the Houston Oilers for two seasons, then-located in Houston, Texas and began playing in 1960 as a charter member of the American Football League. The Oilers won two AFL championships prior to joining the NFL as part of the AFL/NFL Merger in 1970. In 1997, the team relocated to Tennessee playing season one in Memphis before moving to Nashville.

The Oilers first game was played in California against the Oakland Raiders. They opened with a 37-22 victory. The victory gave the team the edge they needed to finish the season with an impressive 10-4 season record, enough to hold the Eastern Division. In the first ever AFL Championship event, the Oilers defeated the Los Angeles Chargers by a score of 24-16. With that victory, the Oilers will forever be known as the first team to take the AFL Championship trophy.

In 1979, the Oilers would face the then rivaled Pittsburg Steelers again in the AFC Championship Game. Again, the Steelers would take Super Bowl with a 27-13 defeat. In 1999, the name change became official and the Oilers would now be known as the Tennessee Titans.

Rivalries - The Tennessee Titans consider both the Jacksonville Jaguars and the Indianapolis Colts rival teams. The Jaguars and the Titans rivalry was fueled in 1999, during the Titans third victory over the Jaguars, when Titans Head Coach Jeff Fisher was quoted making a comment claiming that the Jaguars' stadium was the Titans' "home away from home". The Titans and the Colts were locked in an embittered battle for the 2003 division title; they would finish second and third respectively and accrue some bad blood in the process.
