A Short History of the Washington Redskins
The Washington Redskins are a professional American football team in Washington, D.C. and are members of the Eastern Division of the National Football Conference (NFC) in the NFL. Redskins' home games are played at FedEx Field in Landover, Maryland. The team headquarters and training site is located at Redskin Park in Ashburn, Virginia.
The Washington Redskins football team is the second (first being the Dallas Cowboys) most prized franchise in the NFL, worth over $1.467 billion, according to Forbes Magazine. In 2007, they yielded over $300 million in earnings, while netting just over $600 million. For six successive years they have broken the NFL's record for single-season attendance.
The Redskins have won five of the eleven NFL Championships they have played, which includes three out of five Super Bowls. Four of five Redskin Super Bowl appearances were played under the guidance of head coach, Joe Gibbs. The Washington Redskins is one of only two (Baltimore Ravens is the other) NFL teams that have an official marching band. The Redskins are also one of the first football teams to have its own fight song named, "Hail to the Redskins."
Rivalries - The Washington Redskins have two main rivalries with the New York Giants and the Dallas Cowboys. Their rivalry with the Dallas Cowboys is extremely heated and one of the most infamous incidents relating to the rivalry occured in 1962 when some fans known as "The Cowboy Chicken Club" unleashed four banners reading "chickens" across the 50 yard line in the Redskins own stadium while the "Hail to the Redskins" fight song was playing.
