A Short History of Mixed Martial Arts
Mixed Martial Arts (MMA) is one of the fastest growing sports in America. MMA is an intense and evolving full combat sport that brings together a large mixture of fighting techniques, from a wide variety of martial arts backgrounds such as Jiu-Jitsu, Karate, Wrestling and others, to be used in supervised fighting competitions.
MMA rules allow use of grappling (choke holds, submission, takedowns or throws) and striking (blows with the hands, feet, knees or elbows), while on the ground or standing. The fighters battle it out in an eight-sided caged ring. To win the fight, the fighter must knock out his opponent or make him submit. When a fighter can't take any more pain, he taps on the mat which refers to a "tap out" in a submission victory.
Modern mixed martial arts competitions started gaining mass public attention in 1993 with the founding of the Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC) (though the International Fight League (IFL) is billed as the world's first MMA league). Initially it was based on finding the most effective martial arts for real unarmed combat situations, when competitors of various arts fought against one another with minimal safety rules in place. The following decade MMA promoters put new safety rules in place for competitors and the sport gained mainstream acceptance and popularity.
Modern MMA competition can be traced back to mixed martial arts style contests throughout Europe, Japan and the Pacific Rim during the early 1900s. In 2007, Zuffa LLC, the owners of the UFC MMA promotion, bought Japanese rival MMA brand PRIDE, merging the contracted fighters under one promotion.
Do you really want to miss this?
MMA events are quite possibly some of the most exciting sporting events you could attend. Most of the staff here at TicketFireSale.com are huge MMA fans. In that spirit, we thought we'd show you two videos we think will get you pumped up about attending your next (or first!) MMA event. The first features Brock Lesnar in his MMA Debut against Min Soo Kim at K-1 Dynamite. No one was quite sure what to expect of Lesnar's debut. Although Min Soo Kim wasn't the most challenging competitor they could have found for Brock, he has fought against many top fighters had a good foundation to base Lesnar's performance against. The ground and pound fight ended with Kim tapping out and Lesnar took the title in his debut fight. Not too shabby a start, although some speculate the fight wasn't a good match up and his later tap-out in his first ever UFC event did nothing to squash those claims. The second video, is a compilation of funny MMA moments and we think it is a must see video for all MMA fanatics. Watch big name, small name and no name fighters alike showing the lighter side of the MMA by being downright rowdy and silly. It's absolutely hilarious and worth watching. The "Just Beat It" soundtrack is as funny as the video itself. We were going to pick a favorite moment but we don't have one - the whole video was spot on.
