A Short History of the (IFL) International Fight League

The International Fight League (IFL) is an American mixed martial arts (MMA) promotion, known as the world's first MMA league. The IFL is televised in the United States on Fox Sports Net. Unlike the established norm for MMA events, where matchups are strictly one-one-one, each IFL card is a showdown between two camps of three fighters or more. Each fighter fights one match against the other in the opposing camp.

The IFL was founded January 7, 2006 by real estate developer Kurt Otto and Gareb Shamus. The IFL's intention is to elevate the likelihoods of mixed martial arts fighters, many of them living on a skimpy budget while training without a steady income and only earning small fight purses when fighting. The IFL works to create a system that not only showcases mixed martial arts action but at the same time provides a business plan that allows fighters to share more of the profits of the sport.

The IFL, unlike the rest of the mixed martial arts industry, not only pays fighters purses after fights, they are given salaries and health benefits to fight and train. Many speculate that the IFL may become a major circuit for the MMA, directly competing with the UFC. The IFL and UFC already have a combative relationship as the UFC has previously sued the IFL for illegally using proprietary information that was obtained while hiring executives from the UFC organization. The IFC counter claimed alleging the UFC was threatening potential partners to not work with them, including Fox Sports. The rivalry has worsened recently surrounding rumors and accusations that the IFL has attempted to buy out several of the top UFC fighters.
