A Short History of the UFC
The Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC) is a U.S. based mixed martial arts (MMA) organization, owned and operated by Zuffa, LLC. The UFC became popular on pay-per-view and home video immediately due to its originality, realism and wide press coverage, although it has not always been favorable. The UFC was first created as a tournament to find the world’s best fighters in various different fighting styles and was based upon Brazilian vale-tudo fighting or "No Holds Barred."
In the start of the UFC, there were very few rules and fights were often brutal and violent. Early UFC fights were less sport and more spectacles, which led to the accusation of brutality. Political pressures led the UFC into the underground as pay-per-view providers ceased UFC programming, nearly extinguishing UFC entirely.
Senator John McCain was sent a tape of the first UFC events and he found the sport repugnant. McCain led a campaign to ban Ultimate Fighting calling it "human cockfighting," and sent letters to state governor requesting they ban the event. As a result pay-per-view distributor Viewer's Choice and other independent cable carriers, dropped the event. Thirty-six states enacted laws to ban "no-holds-barred" fighting including New York.
The UFC, in response to the criticism, began increasing its cooperation with the state athletic commission and redesigned its rules to remove certain elements of fighting while continuing to retain the core elements of grappling and striking. They dropped the no holds barred label and began carrying the banner "mixed martial arts" as the UFC emerged renewed and became more socially acceptable.
The UFC has come a long way over the years, so much so, that Senator McCain has revised his previous opinions and has now been quoted as saying: "The sport has grown up. The rules have been adopted to give its athletes more protections and to ensure fairer completion."
If you're interested in learning more about the UFC, the Ultimate Fighter is a great place to start. The show, on reality show on Spike TV, features up and coming MMA fighters in competition, with fighters eliminated from completion via martial arts matches.
