The NFL Club Market Seems Unaffected by the Economy

The previous decade has only seen a total of three NFL Club sales, so it seems a bit amusing that in a time of economic slump, three teams may very well hang a “for sale” sign in the next year and industry analysts think they’ll have no problem attracting Venture Capitalists and other investors:

Rampage Jackson Goes, Well, On a Rampage

In a shocking interview by MMAThrowdown earlier this week, Quinton “Rampage” Jackson talked about battling issues with depression, body weight (”I got fat as hell” he said) and injuries for quite some time prior to the fight with Forrest Griffin at UFC 86. For 2 minutes and 40 seconds, one of the world’s best MMA fighters strangely babbled, repeatedly mentioning God and thanking his doctor.

The Saskatchewan Roughriders Want No Controversy

Darian Durant made his first CFL start one that counts by showcasing a fantastic performance in Saturday’s 33-28 win over the Hamilton Tiger-Cats. And it didn’t take very long before analysts and bloggers alike we abuzz with premature predictions that Durant may very well oust Marcus Crandell as the Saskatchewan Roughriders’ starting quarterback. But head coach Ken Austin is putting any whispers to rest:

BC Lions Trying for a Sellout to Honor Bob Ackles

CFL lost one of its legends earlier this month when Bob Ackles passed away and the BC Lions decided to honor Bob at their July 18th game against the Winnipeg Blue Bombers. The Lions are hoping for a sellout to honor their most successful “water boy” but thus far, the game isn’t sold out and still shows seats available in the lower levels from first-market ticket vendors and fans have been taking notice of the lack of sales.

The NFL’s Shadow Men: The Players that Had to Emerge from the 12 Longest Shadows in NFL History

What happens when a near mythical figure in America’s favorite sport decides to retire?

As could be witnessed in the wake of the Favre retirement, fans weep, small towns wonder about their own finality, and John Madden locks himself into his closet for several days due to a deep depression.

Ok, maybe the last thing didn’t happen. But upon Brett Favre’s retirement (and subsequent denial of a return), talking heads agreed that the NFC North, the division the Green Bay Packers are a part of, was the ripe for the taking.

Had much changed in Green Bay?

No, not in quantity at least.

But it remains to be seen whether Aaron Rodgers can escape the shadow cast by one of the greatest quarterbacks to ever touch a pigskin. Or even if he can go an entire season without wetting himself.

So goes the speculation when an unproven, or even a proven for that matter, steps from within the shadow of a grid iron hero.

With Rodgers’ quest ahead, let’s take a look at others that had to overcome the scrutiny of replacing the all time greats of the game.

UFC vs. Affliction Banned Fight Cards

The night of July 19th will boast one of the most action packed days in MMA history, if not THE most. UFC has long been the top promoter in the MMA world, having the most recognized brand with their name even used interchangeably with MMA by novice fans much to the annoyance of many die hards. So, when Affliction, the clothing line catapulted into popularity due in large part to fighters under contract with the UFC announced their entry into the MMA promotion world, MMA fans knew the UFC nor its head honcho, Dana White, wouldn’t take it lying down.

CFL Legend Bob Ackles Dies

There will probably never be another man to give as much of his time, talent and energy to a football team the way Bob Ackles did to the B.C. Lions and the CFL. Ackles was a member of the BC Sports Hall of Fame, inducted in 2004 and his memoir about his rise in Canadian Football League organization, from water boy to President and CEO of the Lions club. Current CFL commissioner, Mark Cohon said in a statement:

To Retire or Not Retire… That is the Question

There has been a lot of talk this week that Favre wants to come out of retirement. At the moment, Favre is not giving any steam to the rumor mill, but that hasn’t stopped sports columnists all over the nation from starting rumors that Favre will kick off his retirement jersey everywhere from the Panthers, to the Redskins, to the Chicago Bears, to… well, pretty much any NFL team but the Packers at the moment, even though there have been repetitive denials on the topic:

WWE Should Ditch Million Dollar Mania and Get Some New Writers

The WWE and Chairman Vince McMahon resorted to a pretty “spectacular” stunt to keep ratings for WWE’s Monday Night Raw from their slide downward recently with the launch of “Million Dollar Mania”. And this week, he made good on the promise and gave away a million dollars to eight different American viewers/winners. Too bad it did nothing to stop the ratings from continuing to ski downhill:

Jake Delhomme Takes Part in Panther Drills

Last year the Carolina Panthers hit the field with great expectations, including being an acknowledged playoffs contender. The Panthers were severely shaken by the loss and went on a five game losing streak, including a unexpected last-minute loss to the Atlanta Falcons.
