Cowboys and Terrell Owens Part Ways
Earlier this week, the Dallas Cowboys ended their relationship with star wide receiver Terrell Owens. Owens, he had a lot of success with the Cowboys over the last three years, was released by the team. While there were many reasons for the move, the most obvious reason was team chemistry. As talented as Owens is on the football field, he’s equally as disruptive off the football field. When he’s not whining about getting more passes thrown at him, he’s second-guessing the decisions made by coaches.
Without Owens on the roster, the Cowboys can’t help but have better chemistry. However, the problem will be whether or not they have enough talent to win a championship without Owens. The player who will have to step up the most is Roy Williams. The Cowboys traded for Williams last season in a deal with the Detroit Lions. If Williams can do a T.O. impersonation, the Cowboys will appear to have made the right move.
Tony Romo and Jason Witten will also have to step up. Romo has faded down the stretch of seasons in his career so far. With Owens gone and not able to take blame, Romo has more responsibilities on his shoulders than ever. Witten, the talented tight end for Dallas, will be asked to take a number of the targets typically reserved for Owens.
As for Owens, there will be teams out there will to take a gamble on him. When there is a pass in the air, there aren’t many wide receivers in the world you’d want on your side more than Owens. Wherever he lands up, expect him to be the lead receiver and still be very productive in the 2009 NFL season.
There’s a chance that this move by the Cowboys could be good for both parties. The Cowboys can find more harmony in their locker room, while T.O. is able to get a fresh start somewhere else and not have to deal with the scrutiny that comes with playing for America’s Team.
