David Beckham Suspended One Game
David Beckham, the biggest name in all of the MLS and a star for the Los Angeles Galaxy, has been suspended for one game. Beckham received the suspension after he recently got hit with his fifth yellow card of the 2008 MLS season.
The suspension will force him to miss the game on October 19th against the Houston Dynamo, which happens to be Los Angeles’ last road contest of the season. Beckham would have been suspended for Sunday’s game against the Colorado Rapids, however he has to return to England to play in a pair of World Cup qualifiers for his home country.
The Galaxy will find it difficult to win against Colorado because not only is Beckham out, Landon Donovan will also miss the game due to commitments with the United States national soccer team. Donovan, who is arguably the best player on Los Angeles, currently leads the MLS in goals scored.
Despite all the talent on the Galaxy’s roster, Los Angeles is currently in last place in the Western Conference of the MLS. With a record of seven wins, eight draws and 12 losses, the team has fallen well short of expectations. The only consolation for the Galaxy is that they have been entertaining during the 2008 campaign, as they lead the MLS in goals scored at 50. Unfortunately, they also lead the league in goals against at 55.
With only three games left on their regular season schedule, the Galaxy don’t have a chance of making it to the 2008 MLS playoffs. The last game of the season for Los Angeles will be a home contest against FC Dallas on October 26th. With rumors swirling that Donovan may be headed back to play in Germany after this season is over, that final home game may be the last time for the home fans to cheer on Donovan and Beckham together.
