Five Hottest Hitters in Baseball
About a month into the 2009 baseball season, some of the best bats in the league are rising to the top. Here are the top five hottest hitters in baseball at the moment.
1) Albert Pujols, St. Louis Cardinals
The slugging first baseman for the Cardinals is already making a great case for himself as the 2009 NL MVP. Pujols is fourth in the league in batting average (.356), first in home runs (9) and first in RBI (29). The 29-year-old from the Dominican Republic is on pace to have the best season of his career.
2) Carlos Pena, Tampa Bay Rays
Although Pena’s batting average of .271 isn’t impressive, everything else about his production is very impressive. He leads all of baseball in homers with 11. He has 28 RBI and an on-base percentage of .364. Pena is building off of the production he had last season that led Tampa Bay to the World Series.
3) Kevin Youkilis, Boston Red Sox
Coming into the 2009 campaign, many people predicted that Youkilis would win the AL MVP. So far, those predictions look like good ones. His .407 batting average leads the Majors and he also has six homers, 20 RBI and an on-base percentage of .519.
4) Ian Kinsler, Texas Rangers
Second baseman Ian Kinsler continues to show why he’s the best young second baseman in baseball. The Rangers spark plug is hitting .337 with nine long balls and 25 RBI. His season got shortened last year due to injury. If he can stay healthy in 2009, he could enter the AL MVP discussion.
5) Evan Longoria, Tampa Bay Rays
No, he’s not related to the Desperate Housewives star. No, he’s not married to Tony Parker. But the second-year star for Tampa Bay is making his own name. He’s hitting .365 with seven homers and 30 RBI so far in the 2009 baseball season.
