Jay Cutler Traded to Bears - Trade Analysis

Jay Cutler was a Pro Bowl quarterback during the 2008 NFL season while with the Denver Broncos. However, following multiple disagreements with the new coaching staff and management, Cutler and the Broncos had a marriage in chaos. That marriage ended this week when the Broncos traded Cutler to the Chicago Bears.

In return for Cutler, the Broncos were able to land a package that included quarterback Kyle Orton and a pair of first round draft picks. That said, the Bears got the big name in the deal. For a franchise that has struggled to pass the ball for virtually its entire existence, Cutler vastly improves their potential offensively.

Cutler has an intriguing skillset at the quarterback position. Not only is he nimble, he has a rocket for an arm. Give him the right receivers and he should be able to make it back to many more Pro Bowls.

The questions that surround Cutler are mostly mental. He’s been none to make mistakes at the wrong time. And as seen in his disagreement with the coaching staff and management, he can be emotional on and off the field.

To surround Cutler, the Bears have a few good offensive pieces. Running back Matt Forte appears to be the real deal. Young tight end Greg Olson has the potential to be one of the better tight ends at his position. At wide receiver, Devin Hester has the speed to be a top flight option, although he’s more of a return specialist at this point of his career.

Cutler isn’t the panacea for all that has ailed Chicago’s offense over the years but this deal definitely gives the Bears a chance to field an explosive offense for the first time in a long while.

As for the Broncos, they should get plenty of young pieces out of this transaction that they can build around. As long as they find a serviceable quarterback, this deal could work out for the better for Denver as well.
