Landon Donovan Signing in Germany
Major League Soccer may soon lose one of its best players as Landon Donovan of the Los Angeles Galaxy has indicated he is interested in going back to Germany. Donovan, who has played for Germany two times previously, currently leads the MLS in goals with 19.
Donovan first played in Germany at age 16 when he was a member of Bayer Leverkusen. After a short stint, Donovan was displeased and the German team opted to loan him to the San Jose Earthquakes of the MLS. Right away, Donovan dominated for the Earthquakes and helped San Jose to two MLS championships – in 2001 and 2003.
After a successful four year stint with the Earthquakes, Donovan decided to go back to Germany to play for Bayer Leverkusen. A short stint later, the American born soccer star once again decided to return back to the MLS. This time, his rights ended up with the Galaxy.
In his first season with Los Angeles, Donovan once again showed his championship mettle as he led the Galaxy to a title. Currently, Donovan shares headlines on the Galaxy with teammate David Beckham, who is one of the most famous soccer players in the entire world.
In a recent contest against the D.C. United, Donovan proved just how good he is and why teams in Europe want to add him to their rosters. During the game, he finished with three goals and an assist as the Galaxy won 5-2.
Although earlier in the year Donovan talked about joining a team in Spain or England, the team that has caught his eye recently is Bayern Munich. The German team is coached by Juergen Klinsmann, who has specifically targeted Donovan as a player who he thinks can shine in Europe.
At 26, Donovan has established himself as one of the best players in the MLS and perhaps the best United States soccer star of all-time. For his sake, hopefully the third time is the charm when it comes to flourishing in Germany.
