New York Giants Looking Like Champs
After their Super Bowl victory last season, many NFL pundits expected the New York Giants to take a step backwards in 2008. The Giants were good in the playoffs but was their streak of perfection in the playoffs a fluke? Even the most ardent of Giants fans had to have at least a little bit of doubt in their mind.
But after five weeks of the 2008 NFL season, the Giants are playing like the reigning Super Bowl victors. Following their Week 4 bye, New York came out on fire in Week 5 against the Seattle Seahawks. Scoring on their first six possessions, the Giants rolled to an extremely impressive 44-6 win.
Brandon Jacobs, the Giants’ big bruising running back, got the team off on the right foot. He scored the opening touchdown and set the tone for the entire game. By the time the domination had concluded, Jacobs had tallied two touchdowns and 136 rushing yards on 15 carries.
Making the victory even more notable for the Giants was the fact that they were missing arguably their best offensive talent. Wide receiver Plaxico Burress, who missed the game due to a team-imposed suspension, was on the sidelines but that did little slow down New York’s passing game. Domenik Hixon, who was starting in Burress’ spot, finished the game with four catches for 102 yards and a touchdown. Backup wide receiver Sinorice Moss added four catches for 45 yards and two touchdowns.
Defensively the Giants were ferocious. They allowed only two field goals as they handcuffed Seattle’s passing game. Seahawks starting quarterback Matt Hasselbeck had only 105 passing yards as he completed just 11 out of 21 pass attempts.
The 4-0 Giants will try to stay undefeated in Week 6 as they travel to Cleveland to take on the Browns in a Monday Night Football matchup. Following that game, the Giants return home to play the San Francisco 49ers in Week 7.
