Rampage Jackson Goes, Well, On a Rampage
In a shocking interview by MMAThrowdown earlier this week, Quinton “Rampage” Jackson talked about battling issues with depression, body weight (”I got fat as hell” he said) and injuries for quite some time prior to the fight with Forrest Griffin at UFC 86. For 2 minutes and 40 seconds, one of the world’s best MMA fighters strangely babbled, repeatedly mentioning God and thanking his doctor.
While the interview definitely came across as strange (”babbling” would likely best describe it), we don’t think anyone realized that within 24 hours, Rampage Jackson would be lying face down on a highway being put into handcuffs by police.
On July 15th, Quinton Jackson hit two cars while traveling down the 55 freeway in Ocean County and then hopped off the highway where a police chase ensued:
Rampage then began driving on the center divider. But it gets worse. According to the police report, Jackson then drove on the sidewalk, “causing pedestrians to flee for their lives.” He started driving the wrong way on a crowded street, colliding with yet another car in an intersection. As he continued on, running several red lights, his tire disintegrated and he began driving on the rim. Rampage eventually got to the exclusive Balboa Peninsula in Newport Beach, where he again drove on the sidewalk, “causing pedestrians to flee in terror.” - [Source]
After being taken into custody (photos here), Jackson was labeled “medically unfit” according to TMZ and was transferred from the Orange County Jail to a local hospital, but an MMA site reports that TMZ’s claim appears to be unfounded.
Yahoo sports is reporting that UFC President, Dana White, flew to California to post the $25,000 dollar bail set for Jackson. Jackson was released on the 16th. At that time, drugs nor alcohol were claimed to be suspected in the incident. No official word yet from UFC on either the incident itself or the future of Rampage Jackson in the Ultimate Fighting Championship.
