What is Wrong with the Cavaliers?

The Cleveland Cavaliers appeared destined to reach the 2009 NBA Finals. After sweeping the Detroit Pistons and the Atlanta Hawks in the first two rounds, the Cavs faced a young Orlando Magic team in the Eastern Conference Finals. The Magic are talented but not many league experts gave them much of a shot, especially considering that All-Star point guard Jameer Nelson was lost for the season.

Manu Ginobili’s Injuries Clouds Picture in West

A few weeks ago, the NBA Western Conference appeared to be easy to read. The Los Angeles Lakers were at the top of the heap and the San Antonio Spurs seemed to be ahead of everyone else. However, recently the Spurs lost Manu Ginobili for the rest of the regular season and the playoffs. Due to that injury, the entire picture is now different.

Most Surprising Teams in the NBA

If you just look at the standings, you wouldn’t be impressed with the 11-26 record for the Minnesota Timberwolves. NBA Defensive Player of the Year Candidates

Everyone always pays attention to the players that can score, but let’s take a look at some of the Defensive Player of the Year candidates in the NBA.

1. Dwight Howard, Orlando Magic
Based on statistics alone, it’d be hard to give the 2008-09 NBA Defense Player of the Year trophy to anyone other than Howard. He’s not only leading the league in rebounding at over 14 boards per game, he’s far and away leading the NBA in blocked shots. Although not a great one-on-one defender, his stats don’t lie.

Predicting the NBA All-Star Starters

Although the NBA All-Star game is a few months away, it’s never too early to predict which players will be voted into the starting lineup. Since it’s a fan vote, the prediction has to balance on-court merit and the player’s popularity.  In the Western Conference, the center is going to be Yao Ming of the Houston Rockets. Not only is Yao having a very good season, he has the biggest fan base in the world behind him — the country of China. His home country will make sure that he’s an All-Star starter this year once again.

Sam Mitchell Fired by Raptors

On Wednesday, the Toronto Raptors fired Sam Mitchell, the team’s head coach. With the Raptors at 8-9, the organization decided to go in a new direction in hopes of becoming one of the better teams in the Eastern Conference. Mitchell’s firing was a bit of a surprise, especially considering that he was the named the NBA Coach of the Year for the 2006-07 season. Last year, the Raptors went 41-41 and another season around .500 simply wasn’t going to be good enough.
