The Win-less Detroit Lions

The Detroit Lions have been bad for a long, long time. In the 2008 NFL season, they’ve taken it to a whole new level. At 0-12, the Lions have a great shot to become the first team in NFL history to go 0-16.  In Week 14, the Lions will take on the Minnesota Vikings. At 6-5, the Vikings are tied atop their division. Needing a win desperately, they should be able to take care of the Lions.

The Indianapolis Colts are on the schedule for Week 15. A road game against the Colts is difficult even for a good team. For a horrible team? That’s asking the impossible.

Week 16 brings the New Orleans Saints. With the way quarterback Drew Brees is playing, Detroit will be a huge underdog in that game. Even worse news for the Lions is the fact that the Saints will have stars Marques Colston, Reggie Bush and Jeremy Shockey at near 100% after that trio struggled with injuries all season.

In their final game of the season, the Lions will have to travel to Green Bay to face the Packers. There’s a chance that the Packers could be playing for a playoff spot. But even if they’re not playing for the playoffs, the Packers will be difficult to beat on the road.

The Lions are just playing at a very dismal level right now. Offensively, wide receiver Calvin Johnson is a star but the rest of the offense is weak. On the defensive side of the ball, Detroit is putrid. In their last four games, they’ve given up an average of 38.5 points per game.

For Detroit to avoid the record books and pull out a win, they’ll need a miracle. Perhaps a team will overlook the Lions or perhaps Detroit can coax Barry Sanders out of retirement. Either way, the Lions need to get lucky to win a game during the 2008 NFL season.
