To Retire or Not Retire… That is the Question

There has been a lot of talk this week that Favre wants to come out of retirement. At the moment, Favre is not giving any steam to the rumor mill, but that hasn’t stopped sports columnists all over the nation from starting rumors that Favre will kick off his retirement jersey everywhere from the Panthers, to the Redskins, to the Chicago Bears, to… well, pretty much any NFL team but the Packers at the moment, even though there have been repetitive denials on the topic:

“I don’t know where these things come from,” [Carolina Panthers coach] Hurney said of an Internet report earlier this week about agent Bus Cook saying Favre, who retired from the Green Bay Packers three months ago, has decided he already wants to return to the game, specifically with Carolina. - [Source]

But the rumors refuse to die with sites like Yardbarker having published posts that say things like:

I have talked with a few people close enough to Favre that I now feel comfortable that an 80 percent chance may be a conservative estimate. He’s throwing footballs, working out and it’s more than an itch to play. -[Source]

We’re Favre fans around these parts, but we have to agree that while we were sad as hell to see him go, we want to see him stay retired. We’d rather the man we’ve spent all these years watching retire as a legend (and a very rich legend we might add) then retire with people saying that “he should have retired years ago” as they said with other great quarterbacks who stayed in the game too long (Joe Namath, anyone?). If Farve continues to have that “itch”, maybe he should try coaching and help groom the future NFL generations.
